(Mild) Uncoupling of oxidative phosphorylation. Increases lifespan, decreases inflammation, upregulates OXPHOS enzymes and metabolic rate

Uncoupling is like pressing the speeder down in your car without putting it into gear. The motor runs on high revolutions creating heat and burning fuel, but is not coupled to the forward propulsion of the wheels. The energy is lost as heat instead of rotating the wheels.

Biology is not like a motor or a car, but we can use the things we understand to imagine how cellular physiology works

Imagining the energy flow going through the gears. When the last wheel in the system is uncoupled from the rest, it’s as if the wheels can go round much faster, without being stuck, and in that same stroke, also producing way more heat through the increased speed of the wheels.

Salicylates and T3 among others, seems to exert some of their effects through uncoupling the ATP generation from the rest of the energy chain
